TITLE: Exploring Federal Records for Genealogy Research

INSTRUCTORS: Jennifer Daugherty, Head of the North Carolina Collection at East Carolina University, and Karen Feeney, North Carolina Collection Supervisor at Forsyth County Public Library

DATE/TIME: Tuesday, April 29, 2025 @ 1-4pm

AUDIENCE: Anyone who works with those doing historical biographical research or genealogy research.

DESCRIPTION:

The United States federal government documented a wealth of information about people in a variety of ways. From the U.S. Federal census records to Social Security Administration Applications and claims, different aspects of life can be found within these records. This workshop will explore those types of documents commonly used for genealogical research, but it will also delve into how to find and search within more complex resources like the U.S. Congressional Serial Set. The effect the evolving structure of the government and shifting legal frameworks had on where records could be found will also be covered.

Government websites like the National Archives and Records Administration and the Library of Congress and how to search within these repositories will be explored. Participants will have the opportunity to follow along with hands on activities throughout the workshop.

PRE-REQ:

Registrants are asked to create a free Family Search account in advance of the workshop as the instructors will be exploring some of the resources through it: https://www.familysearch.org/en/united-states/

COST:

This webinar is free to active SNCA members. For non-members, registration is $10.

The Zoom link will be sent to you in your confirmation email.
