SNCA will offer three workshops for in-person attendees this year on Thursday, May 22, 2025, as part of the conference.
The workshops will all take place at ECU’s Joyner Library. Workshops have capacity limits, and once capacity is reached attendees will be added to the waitlist.
Each workshop ticket type requires an access code, which was included in your conference registration email. You must use the same email you registered for the conference with, in order to avoid cancellation.
PLEASE NOTE: You must already be registered for the conference to attend a workshop, as the cost is included with your conference registration. Workshops are *only* available for in-person ticket types. Virtual attendees do not have access to workshops. If you register for a workshop and are not already registered for the conference or have a virtual ticket type, your workshop registration will be canceled.
Attendees may choose one of the following to attend, as all three workshops run concurrently:
WORKSHOP #1 - 10am - 1pm (3 hours)
Primary Source Instruction for Non-Teachers: How to Create Sessions that are Engaging and Successful
Instructors: Kristen Daniel, Special Collections & Outreach Librarian at East Carolina University’s Joyner Library and Elliott Kuecker, Teaching Assistant Professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Description: Primary source instruction is a reality that many of us face working with archives. It has become a great way to introduce people to the archives and serve a variety of communities. Even so, many archival professionals were never trained to be teachers. The goal of this workshop is to give you the tools you need to thrive in the instructional setting, not just survive. This workshop will walk you through instructional skills such as lesson planning, activity design, lesson delivery, and assessment. In the end, you'll walk away with the confidence to succeed as a primary source instructor!
Special Instructions: Prior to the workshop, participants are encouraged to think about the setting and circumstances in which they provide instruction. Consider things such as your physical space, available equipment/resources, teaching format, collections you are interested in utilizing, common lesson topics, and the audience you teach. Pondering these elements of instruction prior to the workshop will allow participants to apply the concepts discussed to their unique positions and, ideally, make the workshop more beneficial.
Location: Rotunda Room, 4th Floor

WORKSHOP #2 - 10am - 1pm (3 hours)
How to Connect the Docs: Why your Archives Needs a Podcast
Instructors: Annabeth Poe, Assistant Oral Historian, Division of Archives and Records at the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources with co-instruction from the Podcast Team from the State Archives of NC
Description: Join members of the team of archivists and historians behind Connecting the Docs: True Stories from the Old North State, the State Archives of North Carolina’s podcast, as they detail how to use archival collections to tell important historical stories. Learn how the State Archives established a podcast with a mission to increase archival accessibility through narrative storytelling. Listen as the team shares lessons they’ve learned over five successful seasons while they teach the skills you’ll need to create your own archival podcast to engage patrons by giving voice to the records.
Started in 2019 and recently surpassing 11,000 listens, Connecting the Docs details stories from the Archives’ collections to teach diverse state history. The podcast has covered everything from governor ghost stories to Revolutionary War soldiers to unprocessed collections about state trails. In addition to covering historical topics, the podcast showcases internship work, details archival processes, and includes collaborations with scholars and public historians across the state.
